Mozambique plans to adopt a law obliging multinationals to comply with community rights

Moçambique projecta adoptar uma lei que obriga multinacionais a cumprir com os direitos das comunidades

Mozambique is in the process of implementing the voluntary principles on security and human rights, as a way of ensuring harmonious coexistence between companies that exploit natural resources and local communities..

The information was given yesterday (26) by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, Justino Tonela, during a seminar on "the voluntary principles of security and human rights".

According to Tonela, Mozambique's adherence to these principles aims to force multinationals to comply with the rights of communities.

"There are often investments that jeopardize the rights of communities, even in resettlement districts. We are in the process of adhering to these voluntary principles which will be very important for investments in our country," he explained, quoted by AIM.

In recent years, Mozambique has been developing the extractive industry, with a focus on mineral resources and gas exploration, which has led the government to encourage mechanisms that contribute to harmonious coexistence between companies that exploit natural resources and local communities.

On the one hand, the country's adherence to the voluntary principles on security and human rights is intended to discourage possible confrontations with the communities and beyond, so as not to jeopardize the development of projects, the life of the communities themselves, and the collection of revenue for the state.

The principles on security and human rights are an initiative of the governments of the United States of America (USA) and the Kingdom of Great Britain.
