Mozambique pockets 12 million dollars in taxes from the sale of rubies

Moçambique embolsa 12 milhões de dólares em impostos com a comercialização de rubis

The Mozambican state collected around 12 million dollars in taxes at the latest ruby auction, held by Montepuez Ruby Mining in Thailand, the proceeds of which amounted to 46.2 million dollars.

In fact, the revenues refer to 10% from the Mining Production Tax, equivalent to 4.6 million dollars, and 16% from the Value Added Tax, equivalent to 7.3 million dollars.

The information was recently shared by the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, through the Management Unit of the Kimberley Process, Precious Metals and Gems, which took part in the supervision of the third auction this year of the Montepuez Ruby Mining company, in Bangkok, Thailand, at an event held by Gemfields.

According to a NewsAt the time, 97 lots were counted, comprising 217,044 carats put up for sale, with an average price of 316.95 per carat.

But in addition to these taxes, the company also pays export taxes, including the 2.75% of revenue that must be channeled to the government of the district where the exploitation takes place.

Meanwhile, in addition to these gains, the government also expects to collect 32% in Corporate Income Tax (IRPC) by the end of the financial year, scheduled for this month.

According to the same publication, during the third quarter, revenues from ruby exports fell by 20.4 million dollars, as a result of low production levels at the country's largest producer, Montepuez Ruby Mining, associated with breakdowns in production equipment and military instability in the north of the country.

This year, five ruby auctions were held in Thailand by three companies, including Montepuez Ruby Mining, which held three auctions, SLR Mining and Moza Minerals, which held one auction each, raising 12.2 million and 2.1 million dollars respectively.

Montepuez Ruby Mining has held 22 gemstone auctions since June 2014 until the third quarter of this year, generating 1.12 billion dollars in revenue.
