Mozambique and Zimbabwe renew power supply contract

On March 23, 2022, Electricidade de Moçambique, E.P (EDM) and its counterpart in Zimbabwe (ZESA - Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority), signed a bilateral contract to supply 50MW of firm energy to that country for a period of three years.

The contract signed today is a renewal of the previous agreement that expired on December 31, 2021, and now includes the possibility of supplying additional non-firm power up to 150MW.

During the meeting, the parties took the opportunity to discuss the possibilities of strengthening the bilateral relationship, taking into account the development of new projects of generation and transmission of electricity in Mozambique.

Of the dossiers analyzed by the teams led by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of EDM, Eng. Marcelino Gildo Alberto, and by the Director of Transmission and Distribution of ZESA, Eng. Howard Choga, the highlight was the Temane Thermal Power Plant Project (CTT), with 450MW of installed capacity, whose start of commercial operation is scheduled for January 2025.

EDM also expressed the availability for a medium-long term agreement to supply energy to Zimbabwe from CTT. The Project of the future Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Power Plant, with a forecasted capacity of up to 1500MW, was also highlighted in the meeting.

It was referred that, through the Implementation Office of the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project, it is in the phase of searching for a strategic investor for financing, construction and operation of the enterprise, as well as in the revision of the technical, economic, environmental, market and transport infrastructure studies, among others. It is expected that the strategic partner will be the majority shareholder and will invest, together with EDM and Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB).
