Mozambique and Malawi to link power grids

The presidents of Mozambique and Malawi intend to unite the power grids of the two countries to flow the energy produced in the Cahora Bassa dam, in the province of Tete, which borders Malawi.

During the project launch on Tuesday in Balaka, (Malawi), it was learned that the high-voltage line comprising 218 kilometers is expected to be completed within two years. It is hoped that the supply problems facing Malawi will be solved.

The investment is around $127 million, financed by the World Bank and the German Development Bank (KfW), among others.

During the event, the Mozambican President said that "energy has no political color," in an allusion to the benefits of universal access to electricity for the use of all, whether domestic or business customers.

Alongside Nyusi, Lazarus Chakwera, Malawian president, praised the initiative and highlighted the potential for job creation.

Filipe Nyusi's visit to Malawi started on Monday and ends today, with a program that also included a visit to the railway connection between the two countries, which should be completed next year.
