Mozambique says it is prepared to enter the Kimberley process of diamond sales

The Mozambican government says it is prepared to enter the international diamond sales market. The executive director of the Kimberley Process Management Unit, Castro Elias, assured this Wednesday that the government has met all the internationally required requirements for exporting diamonds, showing confidence in the country's admission to the club of states that trade in this type of precious stones.

"What Mozambique did was to take the 2016 [international] report where all the recommendations that it had to comply came and Mozambique complied, in full, with all the recommendations," Castro Elias said.

To this end, in a delegation headed by the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, Mozambique is meeting in Moscow to, among other agenda items, decide on its entry into the legal diamond trade.

According to Castro Elias, the acceptance of Mozambique in the international diamond trade will allow the activation of 40 prospecting and research licenses and 78 requests for licenses, which are inoperative because the country is not yet authorized to commercialize that type of product.
