The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) has revealed that Mozambique is on the list of 50 countries or territories considered to be the most violent in the world due to armed conflicts.
Quoted by News to the MinuteThe US non-governmental organization says that Mozambique has improved eight places, and is now at the bottom of the list, in position 45.
Mozambique and Brazil are the only Portuguese-speaking countries on the list, with Latin America remaining the sixth most violent country in the world, as in the previous report.
Mozambique is a "Turbulent" country, according to ACLED's three classifications ('Turbulent', 'High' and 'Extreme').
Brazil is considered "Extreme". And there, conflicts are triggered by organized crime which, although it doesn't aim to overthrow the government or control territory, does involve the police.
The NGO considers that "conflicts are now widespread and omnipresent: in 2023, there were 12% more conflicts compared to 2022 and ACLED registers an increase of more than 40% compared to 2020".
The 50 countries or territories account for 97% of all conflict events recorded in the last 12 months.
