Mozambique is the seventh country in sub-Saharan Africa with the largest number of endangered species.

The country occupies the thirtieth position, worldwide, with 490 species at risk of disappearing.

These figures are from the latest assessment of the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List.

This information was shared on Friday in Maputo by the Minister of Land and Environment, Ivete Maibase, at the official launch of the Key Areas for Biodiversity.

The activity of identifying and mapping the twenty-nine key areas for biodiversity was carried out in a partnership between the Ministry of Land and Environment and partners, and was funded by the United States Agency for International Development - USAID.

The launch of the key areas for biodiversity marks the central ceremonies in the country for the World Day of Threatened Species, which was celebrated on Friday, and the International Day of Biodiversity, which takes place tomorrow, under the slogan: We are part of the solution for nature.
