The Minister for Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Fernando Rafael, made a technical visit to the construction site of the Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (ETLF) in the city of Tete - a strategic infrastructure within the framework of PESOE 2025 and PQG 2025-2029.
With an estimated investment of 560 million meticais, financed by the World Bank as part of the Urban Sanitation Project, the ETLF is currently making eight percent physical progress.
The project aims to eliminate the direct dumping of fecal sludge into the Zambezi River and in inappropriate places - a practice that has historically contributed to water contamination and cholera outbreaks.
On a technical level, the operation of this plant will enable the safe treatment of faecal sludge collected from households, the reuse of treated water for irrigating green areas and washing vehicles, as well as the preservation of groundwater and the environment.
This is a project with a high social and environmental impact, with direct benefits for around 600,000 inhabitants of the city of Tete and surrounding areas, promoting better public health conditions, quality of life and urban sustainability.
During the visit, the Minister expressed his dissatisfaction with the delay in carrying out the work, stressing that the contractor needed to mobilize more equipment to make up for lost time.
"The government is attentive. We cannot accept that structural works with guaranteed funding suffer unjustified delays. We are going to tighten up on meeting deadlines. This station is vital for public health and the environment. It is our responsibility to ensure that commitments are honored quickly," said Minister Fernando Rafael.
