Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy and TA can now produce their own Statistics

The production of official statistical information in the country is now decentralized, with the approval by the Government of new institutions with competence to do so. These are the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, which has been delegated the competence to produce information on mining-related censuses; the Mozambique Tax Authority (fiscal statistics); and the National Institute of Health.

This Monday, in Maputo, the first session of the Higher Council of Statistics was held, which, in addition to delegating powers to new institutions for the production of censuses in coordination with the National Institute of Statistics (INE), appreciated the Strategic Plan of the National Statistical System of the Sector referring to 2020-2024.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister, Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, emphasized the need for institutions involved in the production of censuses to focus on quality, since, besides allowing the government, the private sector, academics, researchers and civil society in general to monitor the socio-economic situation of the country, they serve as a basis for the evaluation of Mozambique by international partners.

"That is why, in this context, it is very important that the national statistical system produce quality information to respond to the various imperatives, including the improvement of the mechanisms for calculating Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and, consequently, economic growth," he said.

Speaking to journalists, the president of the National Statistics Institute (INE), Eliza Magaua, explained that under the new paradigm, her institution will not only have the competence to continue producing censuses, but also to validate the data produced by other bodies.

"INE will help to empower the other sectors so that when an indicator is produced, it will be the same for all users interested in the subject. So it is true that the other institutions will have the autonomy to produce indicators, but the results will have to be validated by INE, which is the governing body of the national statistical system," said Magaua.
