Ruby mine resumes production today

Mina de rubis retoma hoje a produção

Montepuez Rubi Mining (MRM), which operates Mozambique's largest ruby mine, has announced that it plans to resume production by today (the end of the year), which has been interrupted since December 24 due to the post-election conflicts.

At the time, more than 200 people tried to invade the MRM village, destroying and setting fire to several structures, and as a result, two people were shot dead by the police.

"MRM intends to return to normal operations before the end of the year," the company said in a statement quoted by "Notícias", recalling that the nearby village of Wikupuri, built by the mining company, was also attacked this week by alleged protesters, with looting and destruction.

For more than two months, Mozambique has been experiencing social tension following the announcement of the results of the general elections, which gave victory to Frelimo and its candidate Daniel Chapo.

The exploitation of rubies at MRM's mine has brought in more than one billion euros since 2012, according to figures released at the end of April by Gemfields, which owns 75% of the company.
