The writer Mia Couto was nominated on Tuesday (16) for the Dublin Literary Prize, thanks to the work "The Horizon Drinker" translated into English by David Brookshaw. The work was nominated by the National Library of Mozambique.
"The Horizon Drinker" is the third book in the trilogy "The Emperor's Sands", the French edition of which has already won him the Jan Michalski prize.
Two other Portuguese-language writers nominated for the same award are Brazilians Itamar Vieira Júnior and Stênio Gardel.
Itamar Vieira Júnior is nominated for his translation of Johnny Lorenz's novel "Torto Arado".
Stênio Gardel is named after Bruna Dantas Lobato's translation of "The Word That Remains".
The three Portuguese-speaking authors are competing for the prize alongside 70 other writers from around the world.
The next step in the award is to define the list of finalists, which will be revealed on March 26.
The winning book will be announced by the Mayor of Dublin, Daithí de Róiste, on May 23rd as part of the city's literary festival.
The Dublin Literary Prize has a monetary value of 100,000 euros, which is classified as the largest amount awarded to a fiction book published in English in a given year. If the book is translated, the author receives 75 thousand euros and the translator the remaining 25 thousand.
