The municipality of Matola city, capital of Maputo province, is working to mobilize about 70 million dollars to solve the problem of cyclical flooding, causing incalculable human and material damage.
The information was advanced Wednesday by the councillor for Municipal Infrastructure and spokesman of the Matola City Council, Firmino Guambe, in an interview to AIM, on the contingency plan for flooding and soil erosion caused by heavy rains recorded in recent weeks in southern Mozambique, particularly in Maputo province.
To solve definitively the problem of sanitation of the environment, at the level of the Municipality of Matola, we made a study that indicates that we need about 70 million dollars. This amount will be used for the construction of drainage ditches, basin recovery, and restoration of the normal course of the waters," said the source, explaining that the amounts involved are far beyond the municipality's financial capacity.
For this reason, contacts are currently being made with national and foreign partners.
According to the source, there is currently record of flooding of streets and houses in the Nkobe neighborhood, Km 15, Bunhiça, São Damaso, Liberdade.
"But we have more incidences right now on the access roads. We have the case of the road that goes from Km 15 to Nkobe, whose passability is conditioned.
The problem of flooding, in some neighborhoods, is due to the fact that some families are building their homes in the normal course of rainwater.
