The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, has recommended that Mozambique's National Telecommunications Institute (INCM), the country's telecommunications regulator, implement measures to promote the safe use of social networks..
Speaking this Monday (25) in the district of Marracuene, Maputo province, during the opening ceremony of the INCM's 18th annual stocktaking and planning meeting, Magala said that telecommunications networks should serve to preserve the lives and well-being of citizens.
According to a AIMIn his speech, the minister focused on the sometimes violent post-election demonstrations taking place almost everywhere in the country.
"We have noted with concern the irresponsible use of the country's telecommunications network to incite violence, hatred and revenge among Mozambicans," said Magala.
For more than a month, the main Mozambican cities have been living in a climate of post-election tension, caused by the demonstrations, which have already caused more than 40 deaths and around 500 injuries.
According to the Mozambican authorities, the demonstrations also culminated in the vandalization of several state institutions, including two schools. There has also been vandalization in mining areas of the country, where protesters have burned camps and work machines.
In view of the situation, the government official assures that by 2025, the INCM must complete the implementation of Mozambique's Digital Acceleration Project; expand and share the telecommunications infrastructure, guaranteeing connectivity for all Mozambicans.
According to the minister, the INCM must implement biometric registration of subscribers, as a way of ensuring greater security and confidence in the use of telecommunications services, continue with the installation of digital plazas and libraries; and complete the study of tariffs, which will help stabilize the telecommunications market and make it more attractive.
