More than 30% of deaths are caused by diabetes and other chronic non-communicable diseases

Mais de 30% das mortes são causadas por diabetes e outras doenças crónicas não transmissíveis

Data provided by the Ministry of Health (MOHAM) indicate that around 33% of the country's deaths are caused by diabetes, cancer and other chronic non-communicable diseases.

The health sector, in partnership with the National Institute of Health and the World Health Organization, intends to carry out surveys to identify the factors that lead to the worsening of diseases in the country.

The MoH indicates that between 2007 and 2019, the number of deaths from diabetes, cancer, bronchitis, asthma and other chronic non-communicable diseases caused the death of around 33% of the population.

"Our sector strives to use scientific evidence to guide decision-making, the formulation of public policies and strategic planning. It is therefore necessary to speed up the generation of scientific evidence on the burden and factors that determine the occurrence and worsening of chronic non-communicable diseases. In this way we will be in a better position to identify and implement the most appropriate measures to prevent and contain the disease," said the Deputy Minister of Health, Ilesh Jani, quoted by "O País".

"The data show that we are living in the new epidemiological reality of the triple burden of disease, characterized by an increase in the weight of chronic non-communicable diseases in a context where contagious diseases prevail," added the deputy minister.

The National Institute of Health also says that climate change in the country has also influenced the implementation of the two surveys, which is why it is urgent to implement the National Survey of Prevalence, Risks of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (InCRONICA) later this year.

The project is being funded by the High Commissioner of Canada to the tune of around 7 million dollars to carry out the surveys, which will cover a total of 5720 people between the ages of 18 and 64.
