The railway linking Mozambique and Malawi from the port of Beira will be reopened within the first quarter of 2022, according to the portal com. The infrastructure cost about 30 million dollars, and work on its reconstruction is already in the conclusive phase.
The reconstruction extended 44 kilometers of the track from off the Sena line that connects the Dona Ana bridge over the Zambezi river to Vila Nova da Fronteira, on the border with that neighboring country. Another 26 kilometers of the corridor were completed on the Malawian side.
The railway has been paralyzed since September 1986, after a sabotage by Renamo men, supported by the Apartheid regime, during the civil war to destabilize Mozambique.
Once operational, the line will take much of the traffic between Beira and Malawi off the road network. It will also compete with the rail route between Malawi and the northern Mozambican port of Nacala.
According to the com citing Wednesday's edition of Jornal Notícias, the Secretary of State of Tete province, Elisa Zacarias, inspected the construction work on Tuesday. During her visit, she noted that "the works in Malawi are also underway and soon we will be able to open."
The Executive Director of the public company Ports and Railways of Mozambique, CFM, for the central region, Anísio Bainha, explained that technical work continues on the Mozambican side of the line, including the completion of signaling and railway crossings. However, he mentioned that some of the work can be completed while the circulation of wagons takes place.
In total, the line covers 115 kilometers, 71 of which are on the Malawian side.
