"Young people turned into thieves because they were hungry," says António Muchanga

“Jovens transformaram-se em ladrões por estar a sentir fome”, diz António Muchanga

The Renamo party candidate for governor of Maputo province, António Muchanga, told his electorate that young people had turned into thieves because they were hungry.

"Let's stop this shame and vote for Renamo and President Ossufo Momade. There are no jobs in the country. Young people have turned into thieves because they are hungry. There are no jobs because entrepreneurs are fleeing," said Muchanga during a rally where he was accompanied by Ivone Soares.

At the time, he said that the cause of entrepreneurs fleeing the country is kidnappings and abductions. According to the candidate for governor of Maputo province, the abandonment of entrepreneurs has a domino effect on the employability of young people.

"They're leaving the country without capital. Without capital there is no investment. And without investment there are no jobs," he said, noting that "it is the governing party that is creating this disgrace". And he appealed: "let's stop this shame".

Nevertheless, António Muchanga's campaigns have been marked by a relatively low turnout of Renamo supporters, at least from what was recorded in the first days of the campaign.

A national portal says that the reason Muchanga's campaigns are "running on empty" is due to his loss of popularity, which stems from unfulfilled promises made on other occasions when he asked for the popular vote.
