Jofredino Faife is the winner of the 6th edition of the National Press Award

Jofredino Faife é o vencedor da 6ª edição do Prémio Imprensa Nacional

Jofredino Faife, who competed under the pseudonym Natália O. Campos, is the winner of the 2022 edition of the Imprensa Nacional/Eugénio Lisboa Prize, for his work Teatro de Marionetes (ou Ensaio sobre a Mecânica Descritiva da Desertificação dos Homens), a "dystopian narrative with a tendency towards science fiction", in the words of the jury.

Made up of the doctor and writer Mbate Pedro, in his capacity as President, Sara Laisse, Director of the Fernando Leite Couto Foundation, and Paula Mendes, editor-in-chief of the National Press, the jury decided to award the prize to Teatro de Marionetes, by Jofredino Faife, as it considered it to be "a rare literary proposal in Mozambique" which, as well as revealing "literary and linguistic erudition on the part of its author", is a "creative, complex and far-reaching work, revealing the investment put into its preparation".

The Imprensa Nacional/Eugénio Lisboa Prize includes the publication of the winning work, as well as the award of €5,000 (five thousand euros) to the winner.

A total of 41 texts competed for this year's prize.

The Imprensa Nacional/Eugénio Lisboa Award was created in 2017 by the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda, in partnership with Camões - Portuguese Cultural Center in Maputo, in line with its mission to promote and preserve the Portuguese language, and aims to select unpublished works of high quality in the field of literary prose.

In addition to the cash component, the prize also includes publication of the works awarded in each edition, thus encouraging Mozambican literary creation. Jofredino Faife should see his work published next year by the Portuguese publishing house.

Jofredino Faife lives and works in Maputo. He is a trained pedagogue. He has worked as a researcher, lecturer and head of the Education Sciences and Psychology department at the Pedagogical University.

He is currently an education specialist working in the non-governmental sector. He won the Rui de Noronha Foundation Prize - 2009 (Memórias de um carteiro, unpublished) and the TDM Literature Prize - 2012 (Filha de um deus menor, AEMO).
