Food insecurity affects 3.3 million people in Mozambique

Insegurança alimentar atinge 3,3 milhões de pessoas em Mocambique

Food insecurity affects 3.3 million people in Mozambique due to drought and floods, said the executive secretary of the Technical Secretariat for Food and Nutrition Security (SETSAN), Leonor Mondlane.

"At the moment, we have a post-shock study from 2023, which estimated that around 2.3 million people are food insecure and projected 3.3 million by March," said Mondlane, quoted by Rádio Mocambique.

She was speaking on the sidelines of the Food Systems Panel, an online platform that brings together data from various institutions on food production, transportation and consumption.

The source said that a new evaluation will be carried out in April to determine the country's food and nutrition security situation, bearing in mind that this is "a dynamic process".

Mondlane said that this group of food insecure people depends on assistance from the government and national and international partners.

The people in need include victims of armed attacks in Cabo Delgado province and Nampula province, both in northern Mozambique, Leonor Mondlane added.

Mondlane pointed out that more than 300 schools across the country are covered by a school lunch distribution program to keep students affected by hunger in school.
