The current rainy season, from October to April, has already killed 16 people and injured 14 in Tete province, central Mozambique. The information was provided by the provincial delegate of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), Ana Paula Correia, in Tete.
The minister, who was speaking to the media, pointed out that in addition to the victims, the rains also caused structural damage, resulting in the destruction of 200 classrooms, and at least 1,101 houses, affecting 5,381 people.
"We have a record of 14 people injured this season and we also have a record of 16 deaths, of which we have four by dragging and 12 by atmospheric discharge," said Ana Paula Correia, quoted by the VOA.
The delegate said that, as a result of the heavy rains, "a total of 200 families have been assisted" so far, stressing that the figures refer to the districts of Macanga, Mutarara and the city of Tete.
