Two years without an answer, future of Kenmare in Moma in the hands of the government

The renewal of the contract for Irish mining company Kenmare Resources to exploit heavy sands in the district of Moma, Nampula province, still needs the government's opinion.

The company has been waiting for an answer for more than two years, after submitting the renewal request in September 2022. The operating contract ended in December 2024, when it had been in force for 25 years. Kenmare's intention is to get a contract endorsement for another two decades.

According to the company's General Manager in Mozambique, Gareth Clifton, the existing resources in the field can be exploited for more than a century. News.

In the meantime, the company has another contract in force for the exploitation of titanium raw materials (ilmenite and rutile) and zircon. The agreement expires in 2029. The company also exploits heavy sands in Larde.

In the country for more than 30 years, Kenmare has had commercial production in Moma for around 17 years. It is the largest supplier of ilmenite in the world, controlling seven percent of global production.

The Governor of Nampula visited the company's facilities and demanded the involvement of the local population in the activities and greater social responsibility actions.

At the end of last year, the offices of the Kenmare camp in Topuito, Larde district, were invaded by the population, allegedly because the company had failed to fulfill its promises of social responsibility to the community. Read more...
