Government forces postponement of health workers' strike for 30 days

Governo força adiamento da greve dos profissionais de saúde por 30 dias

Health professionals decided on Wednesday (27) to suspend their strike for 30 days. The strike was due to resume today, Thursday, but the class justifies that some consensus has been reached with the government.

According to the Association of United and Solidarity Health Professionals of Mozambique (APSUSM), who are demanding poor working conditions, the suspension is the result of talks held with the government since Sunday's announcement of a return to the strike, which culminated in the fulfillment of some points of the demand, including the training of professionals, monitoring visits to hospital units and the resolution of irregularities in the payment of subsidies.

"The Association of Health and Solidarity Professionals of Mozambique (APSUSM) has learned from documents that the government has now acquired 400 ambulances for the whole country, a gain for Mozambicans, not just health professionals; an increase in the import of medicines and medical articles (gloves, syringes, aprons, masks, etc). The framework of the general regime is palpable and it has also been proven that talks have begun with cooperation partners to support the State Budget for the general framework of the regime's staff," explained the organization's spokesman, Anselmo Muchave, during a press conference.

Muchave added that: "the board of the association has decided to suspend the strike for another 30 days", stressing that "the Executive has already started paying the allowances and overtime for 60,000 professionals, with only 5,000 left to go".

"According to the documents the government has shown, all overtime will be paid until possibly the end of April," concluded the APSUSM spokesman.
