The British government on Tuesday approved the sale of Chelsea FC to a consortium led by US billionaire Todd Boehly, who put a price on the table above the one requested by Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich.
"The Government has issued a licence allowing the sale of Chelsea," British Culture, Media and Sport Minister Nadine Dorries wrote on Twitter today.
1/2 Last night the Government issued a licence that permits the sale of @ChelseaFC. Given the sanctions we placed on those linked to Putin and the bloody invasion of Ukraine, the long-term future of the club can only be secured under a new owner.

Still at the beginning of the West's sanctions against Russia following the conflict in Eastern Europe, the current owner of the British club, Roman Abramovich agreed to sell Chelsea for three billion dollars.
"Given the sanctions we apply to anyone connected to Putin and the bloody invasion of Ukraine, the long-term future of the club can only be guaranteed with a new owner," the Minister added.
However, the investor group, which includes Mark Walter, also co-owner of the Dodgers, Swiss billionaire Hansjoerg Wyss and US investment firm Clearlake Capital is pushing ahead with £4.25 billion (close to $5 billion) to have Chelsea FC under its belt.

The British official further assured that not a penny of that amount will benefit Roman Abramovich. "We are sure that the result of the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or other sanctioned individuals."
