The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, said yesterday, Thursday (02), that it is "fundamental" to continue with the gas exploration mega-projects in the Rovuma basin and that these cannot be stopped by an alleged lack of funding or terrorism in the north of the country.
"This is fundamental because it can't be a problem of a financial decision now, linked to the terrorist situation. This project already existed, it's old. That means there was clarity in its execution. It can't run aground for this reason, so let's look for others," criticized Filipe Nyusi, quoted by the newspaper. RFIat the opening of the 10th edition of the Mozambique Mining and Energy Conference and Exhibition in Maputo.
The clearest warning was to the concessionaires of Area 1, led by TotalEnergies, that given the "gradual promising stability" on the Afungi peninsula, in the district of Palma, Cabo Delgado, they should accelerate "the development of the resumption of onshore projects", and that in Area 4, onshore, led by ExxonMobil, "the process leading to the Final Investment Decision should be accelerated, with the appropriate adjustments to the Development Plan approved in 2018".
Meanwhile, Nyusi also indicated that the delay in these projects causes problems since the countries' expectations "are enormous", with the Mozambican head of state saying that he has done what he can to speed up the processes for advancing gas exploration in the country.
