One of the sons of the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, caused an apparent road accident this morning on Avenida Julius Nyerere in Maputo city.
According to witnesses heard by MZNews, two people were seriously injured, including the President's son, Florindo Nyusi.
They said that the car belonging to the son of the Head of State was driving at high speed along the avenue, in the direction of Praça do Destacamento Feminino - Praça dos Combatentes. The person who caused the accident was driving a black Mercedes car.
After passing through the traffic lights at the junction of Av. Julius Nyerere and Avenida para o Palmar - the same one that, turning off Av. Julius Nyerere, passes the Private Hospital, the Portuguese School, and leads to the waterfront, near the Phisycal gymnasium -, he crashed into a Ford Fortuner car, which then hit two children, aged seven and eight, on their way to school.
Florindo Nyusi's car was driving in the right-hand lane. After crashing into the back of the Ford Fortuner, which was in the same lane, he swerved into the left-hand lane.
At that point, witnesses say that Florindo tried to brake the vehicle, but was unable to. He hit the sidewalk, the vehicle dragged for more than 50 meters, and crashed into a street vendor's stall, where he sells meals to construction workers nearby.
Florindo Nyusi was injured and there are still traces of his blood and parts of the vehicles involved at the scene. A tricycle (txopela) was also hit by Florindo's Mercedes.
The son of the Head of State had his leg trapped in the car, in which he was riding alone. He was rescued by a civilian. The escort only arrived about three minutes later and removed him from the scene, without assisting the children.
The same person who helped Florindo Nyusi was the one who helped the two children and took them, along with the mother of one and the aunt of the other, to Maputo Central Hospital.
Florindo's Mercedes was immediately towed from the scene, and then the Ford Fortuner was removed. The txopela did not need to be removed.
There is no certainty as to whether Florindo Nyusi was driving under the influence of alcohol. But when he got out of the vehicle he was not in a normal/stable state of consciousness, according to a witness.
