Chinese businessman kidnapped in Maputo is still in an uncertain location

Empresário de origem chinesa raptado em Maputo continua em parte incerta

The crime of kidnapping has once again shown its hegemony in the city of Maputo, and this time the victim was a businessman of Chinese origin. He was kidnapped by unknown individuals last Friday morning (6) in the Laulane neighborhood. A week after the crime, his whereabouts remain unknown.

Witnesses reported that the victim was taken by a gang, including a woman. They were transported in a light vehicle.

They said they were carrying firearms.

According to TV Sucesso, the businessman's family has not yet been contacted.

Kidnapping crimes have plagued Mozambique, especially the capitals Maputo and Beira, for around 13 years. Most of the victims are businesspeople. Many businesspeople have moved their families and their investments out of the country.

The business sector has already complained to the government and several times criticized the inoperability of the security forces, namely the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) and the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).

The Mozambican Prosecutor's Office has said on a number of occasions that various legal types of crime, including kidnappings, involve PRM and SERNIC agents.
