General Elections 2024 were the most fraudulent since 1999. CIP demands recount of votes and publication of original notices

Eleições Gerais 2024 foram as mais fraudulentas desde 1999. CIP exige recontagem de votos e publicação dos editais originais

The Center for Public Integrity (CIP) revealed today that the 2024 general elections, held on October 9, were the most fraudulent since the 1999 elections. The NGO is demanding a recount of the votes and the publication of the original public notices

For CIP, the justification is that the Frelimo party controls the entire electoral process, "step by step".

In a document published this Friday, the NGO states that, by law, Frelimo controls the electoral institutions and has benefited from this power to "guarantee continuity". It criticized the fact that the opposition delegates at STAE are not citizens prepared to "be the eyes of the opposition"

This year, "the power over the STAEs led to the registration of one million ghost voters - more registered voters than adults of voting age - in several districts."

Frelimo's control was extended last year and this year through control of the polling stations. Four polling station staff members (MMVs) and their trainers were supposed to be selected by public tender, but instead they are now selected by Frelimo.

In the document, the NGO reports several irregularities in the electoral process and demands a recount of the votes in all the polling stations in the country and the publication of the original notices of all the polling stations.

"Our demand will not correct all the ballot box stuffing and other fraud, but it will show the extent of the fraud and reduce the overwhelming power of the ruling party. This action can be taken by the CNE if it wants to show the transparency of the process. If the CNE continues to refuse, the CC can order such a recount," it reads.
