The public company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) guarantees that it has replaced 95% of the electricity infrastructure that was destroyed by Cyclone Chido in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

According to the director of EDM in Pemba, Hermínio Assamo, quoted by Radio MozambiqueFor the completion of 100%, 40 kilometers of the medium-voltage network remain to be completed, specifically the Muepane-Impire section in the Metuge district and Nipataco in Ancuabe, with full completion expected by mid-February.

Hermínio Assamo also said that the district of Mecúfi, where the impact of the cyclone was greatest, has already been reconnected, with only a few communities left to go, and that efforts to do so are continuing.

"The concrete work is the replacement of the medium voltage, I'm referring to the Muepane-Impire section, in Metuge we also have some sections, some Transformer Stations (PTs) that we have yet to replace. There are six PTs to be replaced in the penitentiary area, and we believe that by the end of tomorrow we'll be able to supply the penitentiary area, as well as Niesse village", said the director.

It should be noted that 76,000 of the 80,000 customers who had been affected have now benefited from electricity in this part of the country.

Cyclone Chido hit the Mozambique Channel on December 15, causing torrential rain of more than 250 millimeters in 24 hours and strong winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

In Cabo Delgado province, the districts of Mecúfi, Metuge and Chiúre, as well as the provincial capital, Pemba, were heavily affected, followed by Namuno, Montepuez and Balama. The number of people affected in Cabo Delgado is estimated at 272 thousand.
