Mozambique has already electrified 80% of its 419 Administrative Posts (PA), which guarantees electricity to 50% of the national population, according to guarantees from the Director of Electrification and Projects at Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), Cláudio Dambe.
He said that 82 PA headquarters still need to be supplied with electricity from the national grid, of which 20 are already under construction, including another 11 off-grid electricity stations under the tutelage of the National Energy Fund (FUNAE).
"But we are also in the process of contracting the remaining administrative posts. Our aim is to ensure that work begins on all the administrative posts by the last quarter of 2023 and that they are completed by the end of 2024," said Dambe, stressing that work is underway to achieve these goals.
EDM has electrified five PAs this year, with seven more in the pipeline and due to be connected to the national grid this year, "which could make a total of 12 administrative posts by 2023".
From a national perspective, the northern region has 44 APs without electrification, of which 32 will be electrified through EDM and another ten through FANAE. In the central region, 30 PAs still don't have power from the national grid, of which EDM will electrify 19 PAs and FUNAE will guarantee power for 11 PAs. In the south, only nine PAs are without electricity from EDM, which will electrify five, leaving the other four under FUNAE's responsibility.
In addition to guaranteeing technical and personnel training, Dambe explained that the electrification of the APs is financed by the Mozambican government, so there is no impact on EDM's treasury, even though it will bear some of the costs.
The official presented the data this morning to the Radio Mozambique as part of the inauguration of an electrification system at the Chinga Administrative Post in the Morrupula district of Nampula. The unit cost the Mozambican state 73 million meticais.
Electrification through EDM is carried out on the national electricity grid and FUNAE through photovoltaic systems. When asked about the determining criteria for the type of electrification in each specific zone, Dambe explained that the choices are based on a study carried out between 2018 and 2019 "which already indicated which posts should receive electrification from the electricity grid and through photovoltaic systems".
