Two Mozambican cultural expressions could become World Heritage sites

The Minister of Culture, Edelvina Materula, said that all the conditions were in place to include two Mozambican cultural expressions on the list of intangible world heritage of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNSCO).

These are 'Xigubo' and 'Mapiko', typical dances from the south and north (Cabo Delgado), respectively.

According to Materula, who was speaking at the closing ceremony of the XI National Culture Festival, it is now time to register the 'Mapiko' dance with UNESCO.

"Through these actions we have come here to state publicly that the conditions have already been met for the registration of two more expressions, namely Mapiko and Xigubo," he announced.

These two expressions will thus be able to follow the same paths as other national cultural expressions that have already made the UNESCO annals, namely the 'Nyau' dance, from Tete province, and the 'Timbila' dance instrument, from Inhambane province.

On the other hand, the Minister highlighted the decentralization of the event, since it took place in various parts of Maputo province, such as Matola, Namaacha and Ponta D'Ouro.
