"After" condoms, Elon Musk cuts millionaire support for male circumcision in Mozambique

“Depois” dos preservativos, Elon Musk corta apoio milionário à circuncisão masculina em Moçambique

Mozambique has lost US financial aid to massify male circumcision after the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) approved a cut.

The new institution led by South African Elon Musk approved cutting monetary support to 15 programs, including voluntary medical male circumcision in Mozambique, valued at 10 million dollars.

On his X page, Musk changed his name to Harry Bōlz and captioned it: "Discount circumcision, now less 50%. One of the things USAID was doing was offering free circumcision around the world, burdening taxpayers' taxes. I decided to compete in the business".

Last week, the billionaire had already criticized the US Agency for International Development's (USAI) support for the country to the tune of 50 million dollars in condoms.

The cut to voluntary medical circumcision is yet another measure by the new Trump administration, which wants to see justification for every dollar that leaves the country and understand how the American people benefit.

Initially, the department led by Musk announced a 90-day suspension of all USAID support worldwide. In some countries, the measure was reversed, including Mozambique, after a US court ruled against it.

Last week, the White House released an official list of USAID programs that the administration considers "wasteful and abusive." "For decades, USAID has been unaccountable to taxpayers as it funnels huge sums of money into the ridiculous - and in many cases malicious - pet projects of entrenched bureaucrats, with almost no oversight," the White House said.
The White House listed several programs, including US$ 20 million for a "new Sesame Street show in Iraq" and US$ 1.5 million and US$ 5.5 million to promote LGBTQ+ advocacy in Jamaica and Uganda, respectively. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also criticized USAID for donating US$ 1.5 million to promote DEI in Serbia, US$ 70,000 for a "DEI musical" in Ireland and US$ 32,000 for a "transgender comic book in Peru".
