Covid-19: New "Delta" variant mutation is being investigated in the UK

Health authorities in the UK are surveying a new mutation of the "Delta" variant of the coronavirus, which appears to have a high capacity for infection compared to those already identified.

Since its emergence in the UK, the Delta variant has been dominant. But the most recent official data suggest that six percent of the new covid cases analyzed genetically are of a new type.

The "AY.4.2" mutation, which some are calling "Delta Plus", contains characteristics that may give the virus survival advantages. However, testing is occurring to ascertain the level of its dangerousness.

It is not yet considered a variant of concern or a variant under investigation - although it is being monitored - and it does not seem to call into question the effectiveness of vaccines, according to Radio Observer. And the UK assumes it will not spread on a large scale.

Some cases have also been identified in the USA. There were some in Denmark, but since then new infections with AY.4.2 have reduced.

There is no suggestion that a new vaccine update is needed to protect against any of the existing covid-19 variants.
