Jindal Africa coal train derails on the Sena Line

A railroad incident involving a coal train belonging to the Jindal Africa company occurred Wednesday night on the Sena line between Derunde and Semacueza in Muanza district, Sofala province. There are no reports of loss of life.

The composition of two locomotives and 43 wagons was bound for the Port of Beira from Tete.

The derailment caused severe damage to the railway and disrupted traffic for hours. The work of removing the train alone took five hours. Traffic was reopened after 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning, when the Beira-Marromeu passenger train, which had been stuck at the Dondo railway station, was able to move forward again.

A commission of inquiry has been set up to determine the cause of the accident, but preliminary results indicate a probable deficiency in one of the railcars.

This is the second derailment on the Sena line this year. The first occurred in the Doa area of Tete province, coinciding with heavy rains in the northern part of the Zambezi, and caused an interruption in circulation of about seven days.
