Former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane said yesterday that he had reached a consensus to pacify the country during his meeting with the President of the Republic (PR), Daniel Chapo.
As he said, the proposals made in the conversation were put forward by him and well received by the PR. "We reached a consensus on things that I personally put forward".
The first "agreement" aims to halt all forms of violence underway in the country, such as kidnappings, abductions, murders of pro-Venancio people and the people, as well as against police officers and all those who have different ideas, such as members of the Frelimo party.
"This is the main point of consensus. We totally agree on this," he said, during a live broadcast in which he explained some of the details of the Sunday night meeting with Chapo.
According to Mondlane, the PR has committed itself to ensuring that police violence against the people is stopped. In turn, it has pledged to stop violence against public and private institutions.
"For those who believe in me and in the cause, let's assume from today that violence stops, on both sides," he said. "I'm happy about this consensus".
In the same vein, Mondlane and Chapo agreed that all victims of violence during the demonstrations should receive free medical care.
There was also a consensus on guaranteeing financial compensation for families bereaved as a result of the demonstrations. Mondlane said that Chapo, on his own initiative, had suggested providing psychological assistance for these families.
Another common issue was the creation of legal conditions to pardon citizens arrested for exercising their right to demonstrate.
These issues - with the exception of the cessation of violence - raised at that meeting "which was meant to build trust" still don't have a deadline, "but on both sides there are already teams putting this into black and white".
Mondlane guaranteed that there would be more meetings with Chapo, but now "we're going to give the country a chance to stabilize".
