About 1.5 million people are at risk of being affected by natural disasters

The National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction Management (INGD), revealed this Tuesday that about 1.5 million people across the country could be affected by extreme events such as rainfall, strong winds, cyclones, floods and inundations in the second cycle of the rainy and cyclonic season (2021-2022) that starts next January and runs until March.

The national director for prevention and mitigation, at INGD, César Tembe, there are areas of the country that are at high risk of flooding, hence "there is a need to move forward with pre-positioning of food supplies, boats, first-aid kits for search, rescue and salvage, and other means that should be used in the alluded period.

However, INGD also warns that the latest seasonal forecast indicates that the center of the country may experience more severe weather this rainy season, somewhat accentuating a pattern from previous years.

In the 2020/2021 rainy season Mozambique was plagued by extreme weather events highlighted by storm Chalane and cyclones Eloise and Guambe, in addition to other weeks of heavy rain and flooding.
