The Minister for Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, witnessed a transformation in the rehabilitation work on the N1 road, between Nicoadala and Namacura, during a visit to that stretch in Zambezia province.
After a challenging start due to environmental and social safeguards, Mesquita announced that the Namacura-Nicoadala section is now in 'full swing', progressing vigorously along 35km without any hitches.
The Minister highlighted the fast pace of the work, including improvements to the asphalt, progress on the three crucial bridges along the road and a satisfactory overall performance.
In addition, Mesquita clarified that the need for financial approval had temporarily delayed work on the bridges in progress, but this obstacle had also been overcome.
In response to the impacts of climate change, Mesquita announced the mobilization of additional funds for the construction of a new 60-metre bridge and 800-metre elevation, a crucial measure to strengthen the infrastructure against future climatic adversities, announcing that the "completion deadline is scheduled for September 2024, subject to climatic conditions and other unforeseen factors".
This project not only represents an improvement in road infrastructure, but also reinforces the Ministry's commitment to high standards of quality and resilience.
The 70 km long Quelimane - Nicoadala - Namacura section is 50% and will cost around 3.3 million US dollars.
