Cabo Delgado: More than 1,500 students still out of school due to terrorism

Cabo Delgado: Mais de 1500 alunos continuam sem aulas devido ao terrorismo

Just over 1,500 pupils at the Quirimba administrative post in the Ibo district have been out of school since March due to the terrorist attacks affecting Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique.

According to the Director of Education, Youth and Technology in the Ibo district, the terrorist actions left the sector's infrastructure destroyed and forced teachers to leave for areas considered safe.

"The return of the teachers and the resumption of classes in Quirimba depends on the security conditions," said Magide das Neves, quoted by the newspaper Radio Mozambique.

Meanwhile, the source added that while classes have not restarted in Quirimba, Matemo and the district town of Ibo, the teaching and learning process is going on normally, but with the absence of some teachers who had left the district because of the unrest.

Figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) show that the new wave of attacks towards the south of Cabo Delgado, which has been growing since December after a period of several months of relative calm, has already displaced around 100,000 people.
