The volume of sugar exports to the rest of the world earned Mozambique 27.5 million dollars during the third quarter of 2024, which is equivalent to an increase of 7.9 million compared to the same period in 2023.
The data contained in the quarterly Balance of Payments (BoP) bulletin, released by the Bank of Mozambique (BdM), which the MZNews had access to, pointing out that this result is basically sustained by the recovery in production following the adverse climatic effects that occurred in 2023.
"Sales of this product reached 27.5 million dollars, which is equivalent to an increase of 40%," the document reiterates.
It's worth remembering that due to the floods in Maputo province, which forced the Maragra sugar mill to shut down for the 2022/23 agricultural campaign, sugar production in Mozambique fell drastically to over 200,000 tons, compared to an annual average of 350,000 tons.
Meanwhile, apart from sugar, the volume of exports of the rest of the products considered traditional (tobacco and vegetables) saw a significant increase in the third quarter of 2024, standing at 144.4 million dollars and 130.1 million dollars respectively.
Overall, revenue from exports to the rest of the world earned Mozambique 6.1 billion dollars during the third quarter of 2024, which is equivalent to an increase of 218 million compared to the same period in 2023.
