South Africa denies having sold arms to Russia

África do Sul nega ter vendido armas à Rússia

South Africa is distancing itself from accusations of arms sales to Russia and says it has a rigorous process in place. Nevertheless, the South African government has decided to set up an inquiry to investigate the allegations made by the US ambassador to the neighboring country.

Three days after the US ambassador in Pretoria accused South Africa of providing military support to Russia, the South African government reacted.

South Africa said on Friday that the country is "known worldwide" for having one of the "strictest" processes for selling arms to other countries.

For this reason, the South African Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation says that the US diplomat in the land of the rand has overstepped his bounds, and has even apologized to South Africa.

The behavior of the US ambassador to South Africa is puzzling and at odds with the mutually beneficial and cordial relationship that exists between the US and South Africa.

In addition, according to the Lusa news agency, Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered an inquiry, chaired by a retired judge, to investigate the allegations made by the US ambassador to South Africa.

The country also called on the US embassy to use the established diplomatic channels of communication to air any concerns or seek clarification on any misunderstandings that may arise in the bilateral relationship.

For his part, the US diplomat reaffirmed, after the clarifications with the South African government, "the strong alliance" between the United States of America and South Africa, as well as "the important agenda" of issues that both presidents have. Source: The Country
