LAM seeks alternative routes for more than a thousand passengers on Maputo-Lisbon route

LAM procura vias alternativas para mais de mil passageiros da rota Maputo-Lisboa

Mozambique Airlines (LAM) will ensure travel by alternative routes for more than a thousand passengers who had already bought tickets for the Maputo-Lisbon route.

This follows last week's suspension of flights between the Mozambican and Portuguese capitals, which the national carrier considered to be unprofitable.

The information was confirmed by LAM's spokesman, Alfredo Cossa, who assured that if it is impossible to relocate the passengers, the company will reimburse the amount paid for the tickets.

"We have created all the administrative acts to be able to transport passengers through other companies. They are being relocated until we complete the process. At the moment, we have 1080 passengers who have already bought their tickets," said Alfredo Cossa, quoted in a publication from the News.

According to LAM, the suspension of international routes is the result of a strategy aimed at giving the business a new dynamic, optimizing the profitability of operations and management efficiency.

In this context, the company will prioritize domestic and regional flights, betting on trips that present more sustainable results.

On Tuesday, the carrier announced the suspension of the Maputo-Lisbon connection, revealing that since 2023 it has accumulated losses of more than 21 million dollars due to the operation.

According to Cossa, the costs of these operations were sustained by the profits made on domestic routes, making the connection to Portugal unsustainable and damaging for the company, which led to the decision to suspend flights to that destination.
