The demonstrations were quite violent in Mecuburi. As a result, one person was shot dead by the police when the demonstrators went to vandalize the headquarters of the Frelimo party. The PODEMOS supporters smashed all the windows of the party headquarters and destroyed some of the equipment that was there, such as computers, propaganda material and food products.
The police went to the scene and fired several rounds of tear gas, rubber bullets and real bullets to disperse the demonstrators. One of the bullets mortally wounded one of the demonstrators. In reaction, the demonstrators set fire to the house of the policeman who shot dead the citizen who was at the demonstrations (see video here). The whole house, including the possessions inside, was burned to the ground.
Faced with the inability of the local police to contain the popular fury, a contingent of three vehicles was sent from Nampula to reinforce the corps, which was already tired and at risk of running out of ammunition and being captured by the demonstrators.
Reinforcements were deployed around the town to disperse the demonstrators, but most were positioned to defend the Frelimo party headquarters, to prevent further vandalization. Many tear gas cartridges were fired. (Text: CIP Eleições)
