Two of the three defendants in the case of the embezzlement of over 27 million meticais from the WFP (World Food Program) in Sofala were sentenced to seven months and two years in prison.
They are the financier and his assistant, accused of embezzlement and falsifying documents, which led to the financial loss in 2021. The third defendant, the ex-wife of one of the co-defendants, was acquitted.
According to a Radio MozambiqueWith the amount embezzled, the defendants acquired various personal assets such as luxury cars and real estate, as well as setting up companies, which will be seized by the courts.
In the sentence read out this Tuesday (16) by the Sofala Provincial Judicial Court, the judge in the case, Nelson Gololombe, said that the conviction of the defendants was converted into a fine of 700 meticais per day.
The court justified the decision by the cooperative attitude of the defendants, who confessed to the crimes during the trial.
At the time, one of the convicts said he was satisfied with the sentence, but regretted it.
The embezzlement of more than 27 million meticais at the PMA was uncovered by the Sofala Provincial Office for Combating Corruption following complaints.
