State owes teachers around 3.3 billion meticais

Estado deve cerca de 3,3 mil milhões de meticais aos professores

The Mozambican state's debt to teachers is estimated at around 3.3 billion meticais, Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane revealed today in Maputo. The amount refers to overtime over the last two years.

"What we know is that there are at least 3.3 billion meticais unpaid in education. Naturally, we're talking about 2022 and 2023, and that's what we're working on," he said.

Meanwhile, the head of the economy and finance portfolios assured that the debt is already being paid in accordance with a program whose beneficiaries have already been informed. He did not reveal how much has been paid so far.

He assured that, despite the debt, monthly salaries are being paid regularly, despite some delays. He said he was unaware of any specific cases of delays in the payment of salaries to newly hired teachers. However, he pointed to the possibility of this happening due to bureaucratic processes.
