PR inaugurates duplicated Ressano Garcia railway line

PR inaugura linha ferroviária duplicada de Ressano Garcia

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, today inaugurated the duplicated line of the Ressano Garcia railway terminal (Phase 1) and the expanded passenger terminal in the city of Maputo, as part of the 129th anniversary of the Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) company.

"With this project, the Ressano Garcia Line will respond to the demand that the Mozambican rail-port system has been subjected to in recent years, especially from neighboring countries, especially South Africa," said Nyusi.

The duplicated line, between Matola-Gare and Secongene stations, had an investment of 80 million US dollars in this first phase and has the capacity to handle 27 million tons a year. And for the Maputo passenger terminal, 18 million dollars were invested, tripling the capacity from 25,000 to 75,000 a day.

"The increase in capacity is expected to reduce congestion on National Road Number 4, particularly in the transportation of minerals from South Africa to the port of Maputo," he said.

Construction began in January 2022 and ended in March 2024. Filipe Nyusi was proud that all the investment in the infrastructure was made with CFM's own funds.

"On the one hand, we celebrate the quality of management and, on the other, the responsibility for complying with the maintenance plan, in a clear equation that makes it possible to recover the investment in good time," he said.

On the occasion, the PR appealed to the population to make good use of the infrastructures, valuing them as heritage.
