HCB denies having taken on obscure debt of 250 million euros

Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) denies having contracted a non-transparent debt of 250 million euros with national or international financial institutions.

The company is thus reacting to a video circulating on social media in which it is said that the institution took on the debt and the destination of the amount is questioned.

O MZNews had access to a video in which the Director General of the Center for Democracy and Human Development, Adriano Nuvunga, says that HCB sought the money from the French Energy Financing Agency and the African Development Bank, with one year left before the current government's term ends.

"It's not clear where this money has been invested," he said, warning that "in Africa, debt is one of the ways leaders use to fuel corruption schemes".

He demands that HCB explain to the Mozambican people what it has done with the amount of the alleged debt.

Without referring specifically to "that" video, the company says that the content "contains characteristics of disinformation".

"HCB's Board of Directors reserves the right to clarify to its shareholders, investors and the general public that the company has not benefited from any bank loans from national or international financial institutions," reads the statement sent to the editorial board of the MZNews.

The company says it regrets "the publication of information that does not constitute the truth", also because it was not consulted about the "alleged indebtedness".

On the other hand, the company says it is negotiating with development finance institutions with a view to obtaining better financing conditions for part of the investment in the rehabilitation of the Electro-Production Park (Capex Vital Project).

"The decision on whether or not to take out this financing will be based on its economic and financial viability and for the benefit of the company, its shareholders and investors," it reads.
