The districts of Zavala, Inharrime and Jangamo, in Inhambane province, use cattle manure and organic waste to produce biogas, which has helped to reduce electricity bills in the communities and cassava processing units.
The initiative came about following a request from a charitable association for funding to harness the potential of the cassava value chain.
Professor Adolfo Conde, from the Faculty of Engineering at Eduardo Mondlane University, which is producing the biogas, said that the project had started with the installation of 27 biodigesters, according to the newspaper. News.
Students of all levels are involved in the project, and studies are currently underway to assess the maximum capacity of each unit and the quality of energy that can be generated.
According to Conde, the idea is to gradually replace the use of cattle manure with other organic materials, mainly cassava peel.
