The resumption of the liquefied natural gas exploration project on the Afungi peninsula, in Cabo Delgado province, is the sole responsibility of oil company TotalEnergies and the Mozambican state, according to the French Secretary of State for the Development of La Francophonie and International Partnerships.
Chysoula Zacharopoulou clarified that because the multinational company is a private institution, the French government does not interfere in the firm's decisions.
"TotalEnergies, as a private company, defines for itself the evolution of its activities. It is up to the Mozambican authorities to present this issue to the company, since it is in direct dialogue with the Mozambican authorities," she said, quoted by Rádio Moçambique.
She congratulates the Mozambican government on its efforts to combat terrorism, even though sporadic attacks are still prevalent.
"Mozambique has succeeded in weakening terrorist action. And this gain is thanks to the support of its partners. We have contributed through the aid given to the troops by the European mission," he said.
She reiterated her country's commitment to supporting Mozambique in the fight against terrorism. "We need to tackle the root of the problem," she said.
Chysoula Zacharopoulou is on a four-day working visit to Mozambique.
