Venâncio Mondlane announces the last Mega March of 2023, and speaks of a legally exhausted state

Venâncio Mondlane anuncia a última Mega Marcha de 2023, e fala de um Estado legalmente esgotado

Venâncio Mondlane, head of the Renamo party's list in Maputo city, announced yesterday that the last Mega March for the restoration of electoral truth is scheduled for next Saturday.

"Next Saturday we're going to hold the last Mega March of 2023. In fact, it's going to be a march that will make history," said Mondlane.

Last week a march was scheduled to take place last Monday in Maputo city. Maputo citizens were advised to stay in "lockdown" and boycott their work. The city marched at half speed. However, the march did not take place and the reasons are unknown.

Mondlane said, however, that the marches transcend the circumstantial cause of the elections and are bringing together various people, including those from the Frelimo party. He believes that the marches are a sovereign opportunity to fight for democracy.

"We are fighting to defend democracy, which is almost in the resuscitation room," he said.

This Tuesday, Mondlane's building, in the Malhangalene neighborhood, was surrounded by war cars, patrol cars and police with canine dogs.

The Renamo member of the Assembly of the Republic said he was not intimidated by the police presence at the foot of his home. He believes that the attitude of the police demonstrates that the Mozambican state has exhausted its legal capacities to stop his struggle to restore electoral truth and that the only recourse available is the use of intimidation and police force.

"But we're not going to stop because of that. We're not intimidated and we're going to continue our fight," he said, and in a self-confident tone said he already had a lot of experience with intimidation. "I'm already a bit experienced in dealing with this kind of situation... from the time I was a TV commentator and received threats of arrest and death."
