Fly Modern Ark (FMA), the company hired by the government to restructure Mozambique Airlines (LAM), said on Thursday that the Mozambican airline could resume the connection between Maputo and Lisbon by November 20 this year.
According to Theunis Crous, the re-establishment of the route is of capital importance for the country and will give LAM a new image. Remember Lusa (via Notícias ao Minuto) that LAM lost its flight licenses to Lisbon in 2012.
Cited by LusaCrous said that LAM had negotiated the lease of a Boeing 737 freighter, just to handle cargo transportation in Mozambique and South Africa. After six months, a second Boeing should enter the company's operations.
He predicted profitability for LAM with this cargo transportation plan. "Cargo transportation is a very profitable business".
For now, according to the official, the FMA has mobilized 15 million dollars to finance LAM's operations. This includes the opening of new routes and aircraft.
In this context, the manager said that he hopes to reach an agreement with the Mozambican government for a "better" management contract in the future, taking into account the initial conditions agreed, which also involve the need to reduce costs and increase revenue.
The FMA took over management of the state-owned airline in April and acknowledged that LAM had an estimated debt of around 300 million dollars, according to data provided at the time.
The ongoing strategy to revitalize the company follows years of operational problems related to a reduced fleet and a lack of investment, with a number of non-fatal incidents linked by experts to inefficient aircraft maintenance.
