On Saturday, the Moza Club, led by Moza Banco and partners, planted more than 200 trees on Xefina Island, the country's capital, in an initiative aimed at protecting the coast from encroaching sea waters.
Xefina Island is located less than two kilometers off the Costa do Sol district.
According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Moza Banco, Manuel Soares, the initiative is a way of protecting the island, which has recently been invaded by the sea.
"This is also an opportunity to make it known that we have a serious problem here and that only with the contribution of each one of us can we find a solution," said Moza Banco's CEO, speaking to the press during the event.
Manuel Soares stressed that the planting of the trees, including casuarinas and mangroves, is based on an erosion containment plan and, therefore, there will always be work to monitor the growth of the seedlings.
Entitled "Vamos Plantar Árvores" (Let's Plant Trees), the initiative, which began on Xefina Island with the planting of trees and the planned planting of creeping ferns to contain erosion, will be replicated throughout the country, with the next destination being the southern province of Inhambane.
For his part, the councillor for the Ka Mavota municipal district, Orlando Zandamela, said that the island is an important asset for the preservation of cultural heritage and, for this reason, this initiative will give the island another dimension, in terms of preventing it from being "consumed" by the waters of the sea.
