Mozambicans march for freedom on the eve of National Independence Day

Moçambicanos marcham pela Liberdade na véspera do Dia da Independência Nacional

Dozens of Mozambican citizens joined the March for Freedom in Maputo city on Saturday (24), the day before the celebration of National Independence Day, which is being marked today, Sunday (25), throughout the country.

Among many were placards protesting against the current model of governance. While some called for equality and wage limits, others really wanted to see the "People in Power".

This peaceful march was also called to pay homage to the good sons of the country who died for a free and just nation, such as Eduardo Mondlane and Samora Machel. But it also aimed to challenge the behavior of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique during the march on March 18 in the context of the death of Mozambican rapper Edson "Azagaia" da Luz. On that day, the police repressed the demonstrators with violence, including the brutal use of nooses, canine force and tear gas. This time the police restrained their force.

"The repercussions of the March 18 march contributed to this authorization, the police revisited what their mission is and understood that the people have their rights and the march has to be orderly and safe and here we can see that they are there to guarantee safety and that people can freely observe their constitutional right," said Armando Mahumane, spokesman for the March's Organizing Committee.

At a crossroads on Avenida Eduardo Mondlane, there was applause "for democracy" when the freedom march crossed paths with another, in the opposite direction, from the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, the second largest parliamentary group after the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), which has been in power since independence.

The march featured the music of rapper Azagaia, who has made a name for himself on the music scene with his music and constructive criticism.

The march went through the heart of the capital, from the statue of Eduardo Mondlane to that of Samora Machel, in front of the Maputo City Council building, where June 25 is celebrated and where it all began on March 18.
